This square bag features the Lion of Judah, symbol of the Jewish tribe of Judah symbolizing the origins of the monarchy in Ethiopia with the legendary King Menelik I, son of the Queen of Sheba and King Solomon, who in turn was the son of King David of the lineage of Judah.
Today the Lion of Judah is also a prominent symbol of Rastafarianism. It represents Emperor Haile Sellasie I. Its is a symbol of strength, kingship, pride and African sovereignty.
With this legend we grasp the sense of how symbols and iconographies of different cultures can mix and merge.
The symbol appearing on this messenger is framed by the words "Ethiopia" in Amharic and English and by the daisy flowers "meskal" (bidens pachyloma), a flower flourishing in September, at the end of the rainy season, during the Ethiopian spring.
